In the city of Paharpur, you can find the majestic and wonderful Somapuri Vihara, a 20m-high ruin that remains of a 1300-year-old red brick stupa. This destination is shaped like a quadrangle with almost 11 hectares and has monastic cells that like to the outer walls and enclose the courtyard with the stupa at its center. When visiting you will be able to admire the clay tiles in its base, which illustrate various people and creatures in different postures. The history of this place says that the central stupa, once the main monastery of the place, was surrounded by at least 177 small buildings, once a living place for monks, and then used as meditation rooms. It is also estimated that 92 of these houses may contain the remains of saintly monks who had once resided there. This monastery is thought to have been settled by Buddhists, Jains, and Hindus. That theory will explain the mixture of the artwork around this destination, where you can observe Jains culture and heritage with the Charurmukhar and statues of their god, Manzuri. Also, Hindus sculptural stonework and also statues of Ganesh, and finally bronze images of Buddha and statues of Krishna, as artwork representing themes from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. Enjoy the mixture of culture and history!
