Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is meant by an ETIAS?

ETIAS is an electronic system that allows the authorities to keep track of the non-EU citizens who do not require a visa to enter Belgium. ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System. It’s a travel authorization system which will save travellers time and improve border safety. ETIAS will become mandatory in the year 2025, by then if you are in need of a travel authorization iVisa.com provides a fast, easy and safe document processing service that you can utilize with ease.

How is the new visa waiver system helpful for Macedonia nationals wishing to travel to Belgium?

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is a pre-travel system for non-visa requiring visitors. Therefore, it helps Macedonian travelers to visit Belgium for about 90 days without a visa and holders can enjoy multiple visits to various Schengen areas (countries included in the Schengen agreement) within this limited period. The visitors can enter for business or travel purposes but to enroll in studies or work in Belgium, you will require a visa (long term visa). It also helps travelers to have safe and secure travel after checks where sudden attacks can be avoided.

Is a visa the same as the ETIAS visa waiver? If not, why?

No. A visa is not the same as the ETIAS waiver. To apply for a visa, one needs to go to the embassy to get the application through the consulate. The ETIAS visa waiver is an easier application process which is totally online. Whereas, as a general rule, a Schengen visa can take up to 15 days, and in some cases, between 30 or 60 days, the online ETIAS application will take just a few minutes. The validity will be for 3 years, which is longer than the validity of a Schengen visa. ETIAS authorization will be valid for an unlimited number of entries. If you need a visa online then the best place to look is iVisa.com

On what grounds could my ETIAS application result be refused?

The main reasons that may lead to the refusal of an ETIAS application are as follows:

  • If the applicant uses a travel document that is stolen, lost, or misappropriated.
  • If the person faces an illegal immigration risk.
  • If the applicant possesses a high epidemic risk
  • If the applicant is a security risk to citizens and travelers of the Schengen Area.
  • If the applicant fails to attend interviews.
  • The applicant fails to reply to a request for additional information
  • In the case of serious doubts about the authenticity of the information disclosed.

“The EU Commission has clarified that several categories are exempt from the requirement of the ETIAS travel authorization”. Who doesn’t need it?

  • Persons or refugees who do not hold the nationality of any country, who reside in a member state and hold the travel document issued by that member state.
  • Holders who possess long-stay visas
  • Holders of residence permits
  • Third-country nationals who are family members of a Union citizen and who hold a residence card under that directive.
  • Nationals of Andorra, Monaco, and San Marino and holders of a passport issued by the Vatican City state.
  • Third-country nationals holding diplomatic or service passports have been exempted from visa requirements.

Will the ETIAS system inform nationals of Macedonia in advance of the expiry date of travel authorization?

The ETIAS central system will automatically inform the holder of a travel authorization via the email service 120 days in advance of the expiry date on the travel authorization expiration, as well as, on the possibility to submit new travel authorization.

What requirements do Macedonia nationals need to apply for an ETIAS visa?

The applicant needs to fill in his details on the form online, which includes: Biometric information, information regarding citizenship, a valid email address and phone number, education and work experience, first EU country needed to visit, health, and medication-related questions, and other background information.

What could be done if the traveler’s application for ETIAS gets denied?

The applicant can find out the status of the authorization process within minutes. If the response shows a denial message, the reason for the rejection will be provided and the applicant can appeal that decision, or based on the reason mentioned, he/she can adjust their application or try again.

What role does ETIAS watchlist play in the application process?

The main purpose of the watchlist is to provide an extensive list of people who have already committed or are judged likely to commit a criminal offense. This will keep a record of information about those who are potential threats to Belgium. The ETIAS watchlist will be established and maintained by Europol, the European law enforcement organizations. The details entered by the applicant will be reviewed digitally with the information stored in various security systems including the ETIAS watchlist. Thus, it helps to track the data of applicants who have criminal traces and helps to minimize attacks, and provides secure travel by denying their travel authorization.
