When traveling around Denmark, we recommend you to visit the Kronborg Slot in Helsingor. This destination is best known as Elsinore Castle from Shakespeare's play, Hamlet. Declared a Unesco World Heritage Site, this impressive castle is a masterpiece of the Renaissance period. The castle is surrounded by moats, fortifications, and bastions in the Vaubanese style.
The castle was created as Kroger, a toll house built by King Erik of Pomerania in the 1420s to control the Øresund Strait. Ships had to pay transit fees, which generated large revenues for the country and the royal family. In 1629 a great fire destroyed much of the castle's interior, except for the chapel, and was rebuilt by King Christian IV. The castle was not always owned by Denmark.
During the war between Sweden and Denmark, the Swedes occupied the castle from 1658 to 1660. After the war, the royal family did not want to live inside the castle, so from 1785 to 1924, it was used as barracks until it became a museum.
Although you can walk around the castle for free, it is worth paying the entrance fee to explore the rooms of the inner palace and complete the tour. We recommend taking the tour with a guide to better explain the history of the castle.
