iVisa

Updated on May 14, 2024

From 2025, the ETIAS will be mandatory for visa-exempted citizens to visit European countries. The new travel document will be required by countries and microstates of the Schengen Zone, as well as some other countries of the European Union. More than 50 nationalities can apply for this electronic travel authorization, but how will it work for dual passport holders?

Once the ETIAS is required to travel to Europe, only countries part of the Schengen agreement will be exempt from the rule. So, in the case of dual citizenship travelers, it'll depend on their nationalities.

Do I Need ETIAS if I have Dual Citizenship?

The ETIAS will be a mandatory document to enter Europe for tourism, business, or medical purposes from 2025 onwards. This authorization will be required by the Schengen countries, some other EU countries, and member states.

But you may not need to apply if you are a dual passport holder. It'll depend on your nationality. In case your second citizenship is from a European country that belongs to the Schengen Area, you're exempt from the ETIAS application. However, if your dual citizenship isn't from any country belonging to the Schengen Area, you still have to get the ETIAS.

For example, US citizens who are also French citizens can visit Europe without an ETIAS because France is part of the Schengen zone. Otherwise, if the dual passport holder is a US traveler who is also a Canadian or UK citizen, a valid ETIAS will be necessary for Europe entry since these countries aren't part of the Schengen agreement.

The ETIAS will be valid for 3 years and multiple entries. Travelers can stay for up to 90 days in a 180-day period.

The ETIAS is digitally connected to the traveler's passport; when the passport or ETIAS validity expires, you must apply for the document again to travel to Europe.

The ETIAS application process is very simple. Passengers apply online, using a computer or cellphone from anywhere. It takes just a few steps to apply on the iVisa website and receive the ETIAS in your email.

If your passport expires, you'll need another ETIAS because you have to enter Europe with the same passport as the ETIAS.

Nationalities where dual passport holders don't need an ETIAS

Not all countries recognize and allow dual citizenship. Therefore, to confirm whether you do not need to apply for an ETIAS as a dual passport holder, you need to see if your nationality recognizes dual citizenship. Additionally, you should determine if the country is part of the Schengen Zone and will adopt the ETIAS.

Check the following European nationalities that exempt dual citizens from ETIAS application:

Belgium Switzerland Greece France Finland
Germany Italy Poland Hungary Iceland
Sweden Slovenia Malta Spain Portugal
