Updated on May 14, 2024

From 2023, the ETIAS for Canadian citizens will be required. Let's find out all the requirements, processes, costs, and how to get the authorization once it is implemented.

Europe is a dream destination to spend vacation time with historic cities, art museums, and beautiful landscapes. The old continent also has some of the most developed cities in the world, like London and Paris, where a lot of business meetings occur. But can Canadians travel to Europe without a visa? From 2023 onwards, the ETIAS for Canadians will be required.

Canadian citizens can enter Europe visa-free for 90 days. But the rules changed, and from November 2023 onwards, the ETIAS visa waiver will be a mandatory document to visit countries of the Schengen Zone. The ETIAS visa waiver is a new authorization system that will share European travel information between the countries, intending to keep the territory safe.

In addition, you'll see that the ETIAS authorisation system to travel from Canada to Europe is simple and completely online. Keep reading to learn how to apply for the ETIAS visa waiver.

Everything you need to know about the ETIAS for Canadians

Do you want to visit the Colosseum in Italy? Enjoy the Greek islands? Or try the best French cuisine? Well, Europe is full of attractions, but Canadian citizens need an ETIAS visa waiver to visit most of the countries after November 2023.

The new ETIAS visa will be required for tourism, business, or medical purposes. It'll be mandatory to visit Schengen countries, member states, and some other European Union countries that aren't part of the Schengen area.

The travel document allows Canadian citizens to stay 90 days in Europe, within a 180-day period. The ETIAS visa waiver is valid for multiple entries during a period of 3 years. Be aware that if your passport expires, you'll need another ETIAS visa waiver because you have to enter Europe with the same passport as the visa.

The good news is that the ETIAS visa waiver application process is entirely online, so travelers can apply with a computer or cellphone from anywhere. Find steps for the application below. Leave the hard work to our experts, and enjoy your time planning your trip to Europe!

European countries that require an ETIAS

As part of the Schengen agreement, 26 European countries abolished passport requirements to enter the Schengen zone. From 2023 on, the ETIAS travel authorization will be applied to those nationalities that currently do not need a Schengen visa to enter Schengen area countries.

These are all the Schengen countries:

Austria Belgium Luxembourg The Netherlands
Germany France Spain Portugal
Sweden Finland Denmark Lithuania
Latvia Estonia Poland Slovakia
Hungary Slovenia Italy Greece
The Czech Republic Malta

ETIAS application process: How to get the ETIAS

The process for Canadian citizens to apply for the ETIAS visa waiver is very simple. First, they need to fill in their personal information on iVisa application page, which takes just a few minutes. After processing, all they have to do is wait to receive the valid ETIAS in the email inbox and pack the bags to go to Europe.

Just be aware that travelers with the ETIAS visa waiver request blocked, will be denied entry into European countries and can't cross borders.

Documents required for US passport holders:

The ETIAS visa waiver has few requirements. However, here is the list of what Canadians need for the visa:

  • A valid passport with at least six months of validity.

  • An e-mail address where you will receive your ETIAS.

  • Debit or credit card to pay the ETIAS application fee.

How do I process my ETIAS for citizens of Canada?

With those three requirements on hand, you can visit the iVisa application page from a mobile device or computer. Please follow these steps to apply for the ETIAS visa waiver:

  • First, fill out your information on the iVisa application page. Select a processing time to obtain your ETIAS.

  • Second double-check all the details you filled out in your ETIAS. Pay the fee through a debit or credit card.

  • Third, and finally, after uploading all the requirements, click on the 'submit' button. As soon as you obtain the ETIAS visa waiver, you''ll receive the document in your email.

ETIAS Fee and processing times

Canadian citizens have three different options of iVisa processing times for ETIAS visa waiver to choose from:

  • Standard processing time: If you have plenty of time, this is the best option. You'll get your ETIAS visa waiver in a few days, but at a low cost.

  • Rush processing time: This option allows you to have the ETIAS visa waiver in a short time. It's a good choice if you are in a hurry.

  • Super rush processing time: If you have urgency to get the ETIAS authorization, this option allows getting the visa ASAP.

Why was the travel document implemented?

The ETIAS implementation was done by a European Commission with countries and member states from the Schengen area and other countries from the EU or non-EU. The new visa is a measure to increase security within European borders and reduce the risk of crimes and terrorism.

The system shares European travel information about passengers and alerts countries if there's a risk. The data is checked against international and European security databases, such as ETIAS Watch list, Interpol, and Europol. If something is wrong, the application's answer will be a request blocked.
