Do Peruvian citizens need an Italy ETIAS?

Peruvian travelers currently have the privilege of visa-free access to Italy and several other European countries. However, changes are on the horizon. Starting from mid-2025, Peruvians will be required to apply for an Italy ETIAS for short stays in Italy, whether for tourism, business, or transit.

The ETIAS, or European Travel Information and Authorization System, was publicly announced in 2016. The key purpose behind this initiative is to boost security within the Schengen Zone. Until now, Peruvians could enjoy unrestricted movement within these countries using their passports. With the ETIAS, an additional security measure is in place, aimed at ensuring safer travels for everyone.

It's important to clarify that the ETIAS is not a visa. Instead, it's a travel authorization system, similar in function to the US ESTA and the Canada eTA. These systems strike a balance between maintaining security and facilitating smooth travel for visitors.

One of the major benefits of the ETIAS is its all-encompassing nature. A single ETIAS allows Peruvian citizens to access Italy and all other ETIAS-required countries. This is incredibly convenient for those who wish to visit multiple European destinations, as it eliminates the need for numerous travel documents. In essence, the ETIAS is your gateway to a variety of European adventures.
