Do South Korean citizens need an Italy ETIAS?

South Korean citizens currently enjoy the ease of visa-free entry to Italy and numerous other European countries, which has made their travel experiences much more straightforward.

However, a notable change is coming. Starting from mid-2025, South Korean nationals will need to secure an Italy ETIAS for short visits to Italy, whether for tourism, business, or transit reasons.

The European Travel Information and Authorization System, or ETIAS, was introduced in 2016. Its primary goal is to strengthen security across the Schengen Zone. Previously, South Korean passport holders, along with those from other visa-exempt countries, could travel freely to these regions with just a passport. The ETIAS adds an additional layer of security screening before travel, improving safety for everyone.

It's important to understand that the ETIAS is not a visa but a travel authorization. It's just like the US ESTA and the Canada eTA, which are designed to maintain security while facilitating easier travel.

One of the major perks of the Italy ETIAS is its broad coverage. A single ETIAS authorization allows South Korean citizens to visit all the countries participating in the ETIAS program. This is particularly beneficial for those who wish to explore multiple European destinations, as it consolidates travel formalities. The ETIAS acts as a single pass to various European experiences.
