Visiting Kenya is made easy with the ETA
Traveling to Kenya has just become more accessible! As of 1 January 2024, the country rolled out a brand-new Kenya ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) system.
Here’s the scoop:
-
This system replaces the Kenya eVisa.
-
The ETA is a mandatory requirement for all travelers to Kenya.
-
The only exceptions are Kenyan nationals and travelers from the East African Community (EAC): The Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Federal Republic of Somalia, the republics of Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda, as well as the United Republic of Tanzania.
-
Like the current eVisa, it allows a stay of up to 90 days and is valid for a single entry.
Differences between the Kenya ETA and Kenya eVisa
The terms “Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)” and “Electronic Visa (eVisa)” often cause confusion, but they refer to two distinct types of travel permissions. Get the rundown on their differences below.
Kenya ETA essentials
The Kenya ETA is a pre-screening process for visa-exempt foreign nationals. It’s not necessarily a visa, but is still a mandatory requirement for all international visitors to board a flight to Kenya.
The application process for an ETA is straightforward, quick, and done entirely online. It typically involves submitting your personal and travel information, and the approval is often faster than a visa application. It's also more affordable than the eVisa, making the country more accessible to travelers from all over the world.
We recommend applying at least 3 days before your trip to Kenya.
Kenya eVisa essentials
The Kenya eVisa was a digital version of a traditional visa. The eVisa served the same purpose as a conventional visa but is applied for, processed, and received online.
The eVisa application process, while online, was slightly more detailed than that of an ETA. It required additional documentation. Visitors looking to visit for tourism can get their ETA much faster and easier.
When will the Kenya ETA be implemented?
