Lithuania ETIAS Travel Authorization: Apply now

Lithuania ETIAS: Join the waitlist

Last updated: September 2023

Starting in 2024, non-EU travelers from visa-exempt countries who want to visit Lithuania will need an ETIAS. This change means that if you're planning to stroll through Lithuania's picturesque old towns or visit the peaceful Trakai Castle, you'll have to prepare a bit differently. Instead of the earlier visa-free entry, citizens from visa-exempt countries outside the European Union will need an ETIAS authorization to freely explore Lithuania and other countries in the Schengen Area.

Let's take a closer look at the ETIAS Lithuania: the application steps, eligibility requirements, and associated costs.

What is the Lithuania ETIAS?

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System, known as ETIAS, is a new electronic travel authorization that will be available in 2024. It's intended for travelers who previously could visit Europe without a visa.

The ETIAS was first proposed in 2016, and its primary purpose is to enhance travel security in Europe and the Schengen Area. In the past, a valid travel document like a passport was the only travel requirement, meaning there was limited information on visa-free visitors. The ETIAS changes that by offering a more comprehensive oversight for European authorities.

Because Lithuania is located in the Schengen Zone, visa-exempt travelers must first obtain a Lithuania ETIAS before entering the country.

What can I do in Lithuania with an ETIAS travel authorization?

The ETIAS can be used to travel to Lithuania and the Schengen Area for:

  • Tourism

  • Business-related activities like a conference or a meeting

  • Short-term studies not longer than 3 months

  • Medical treatment.

What can't I do with the Lithuania ETIAS?

The Lithuania ETIAS doesn't permit you to:

  • Undertake a course of study that is longer than 3 months

  • Work

  • Reside permanently in Lithuania

Who can apply for the Lithuania ETIAS?

The ETIAS for Lithuania is designed specifically for nationals of countries that don't need a visa to enter Europe and the Schengen Zone.

These European countries require visa-exempt travelers to have an ETIAS travel authorization:

Austria Germany Netherlands
Belgium Greece Norway
Bulgaria Hungary Poland
Croatia Iceland Portugal
Cyprus Italy Romania
Czech Republic Latvia Slovakia
Denmark Liechtenstein Slovenia
Estonia Lithuania Spain
Finland Luxembourg Sweden
France Malta Switzerland

To be eligible for the ETIAS, you must meet all the following conditions:

  • You aren't an EU citizen.

  • Your country has a visa waiver agreement for short-term stays with European countries requiring ETIAS.

  • You haven't been issued a residence permit, residence card, or similar document by any EU nation.

Who is eligible for the Lithuania ETIAS?

Travelers of all ages from non-European countries who can enter Europe, Lithuania, and the rest of the Schengen Area without a visa will need an ETIAS.

To find out if you're eligible for an ETIAS and the requirements you must meet based on your nationality, please use our Visa Checker Tool.

ETIAS-exempt countries: Who doesn't need to apply for a Lithuania ETIAS?

EU nationals and residents don't need a Lithuania ETIAS. They can travel freely within the country and the Schengen bloc using their passport or national identity card.

If you already have a valid Schengen visa, you don't need to apply for the Lithuania ETIAS.

Can minors apply for a Lithuania ETIAS?

Minors from visa-exempt countries must apply for the Lithuania ETIAS visa waiver before entering the country.

The parent or legal guardian of the child can complete and submit the ETIAS application form on their behalf. If you're applying for more than one minor, each child will need their own separate application.

How long can I stay in Lithuania with the ETIAS?

The ETIAS is valid for 3 years or until the travel document used during the application expires, whichever comes first.

Once issued, you can enter and leave Lithuania and other Schengen member states multiple times, provided the total number of stays doesn't exceed 90 days within a 6-month period.

Can I extend my Lithuania ETIAS?

You cannot renew your Lithuania ETIAS once it expires. You'll have to apply for a new one.

If your travel document expires while your ETIAS is still valid, you'll still need to apply for a new one.

Required documents for the Lithuania ETIAS

These are the documents you'll need when applying for an ETIAS:

  • A valid travel document – This is typically a passport that shouldn't expire in less than three months from your intended departure date.

  • Filled-out application form – You'll be asked to provide information like your date of birth and nationality; your parents' first name(s); your level of education and current occupation; the country of your first intended stay and the address of your destination; and details about any past criminal convictions or past travels to war or conflict zones.

If you have a family member residing in a European nation requiring ETIAS authorization, you must provide their specific personal details. You'll also need to outline the exact nature of your familial connection to them.

There will be a government fee of 7 euros, or roughly $8, for the Lithuania ETIAS.

Travelers who are minors (under the age of 18) or over 70 years of age are exempt from paying this fee.

For a smoother application experience and to improve your chances of getting the ETIAS quickly, consider applying with us. Please note that there will be an additional service fee for this benefit.

Lithuania ETIAS processing time

Most people receive their ETIAS travel authorization pretty quickly, often within minutes. That said, there are instances where it might take up to 30 days. So, to avoid complicating your travel plans, it's wise to apply well ahead of your departure date.

When the ETIAS is operational, you can easily apply for this travel authorization on our website. There will be three processing options available:

  • Standard processing time: A great fit if your trip's still a while away.

  • Rush processing time: A swifter choice, though it comes at a bit more expense.

  • Super rush processing time: The fastest route for those pressed for time.

Keep in mind that the iVisa processing time doesn't include the time the Lithuanian government will take to process your application.

Do transit passengers need the Lithuania ETIAS?

Visa-exempt travelers transiting through Lithuania don't need an ETIAS if they remain in the international transit area of the airport.

However, this travel authorization will be required if they want to leave the transit area and enter Lithuania or any of the 30 European nations requiring ETIAS authorization.

Lithuania entry requirements or restrictions

Lithuania is ready to host travelers without imposing stringent entry limitations. There's no need for COVID-19 vaccination papers or related certificates. But do make sure you have these key documents:

  • An up-to-date travel document, such as a passport.

  • A valid ETIAS authorization or Schengen visa.

Differences between Lithuania ETIAS and Lithuania Schengen Visa

It can be confusing to know whether you need to apply for a Lithuania ETIAS or a Lithuania Schengen Visa. To begin with, the main difference is that the ETIAS isn't a visa. It's an electronic pass, similar to the United States ESTA.

Here are other key differences between an ETIAS and a Schengen visa.

  • Eligibility: The ETIAS is for travelers who currently can travel to Europe without a visa. The Schengen visa, on the other hand, is required for travelers who are unable to travel to European countries without a visa.

  • Application process: The ETIAS application is completed online and requires a valid travel document and basic information. The Schengen visa application process is more complex and time-consuming. You need to present supporting documents like proof of financial means and attend an in-person interview where you'll provide your biometrics.

  • Number of entries: An approved ETIAS visa waiver allows multiple entries within its validity period. The Schengen visa can be single, double, or multiple-entry. An immigration officer ultimately determines the number of entries granted.

  • Format: The ETIAS is completely electronic and digitally linked to a travel document. A Schengen visa is a paper document physically affixed to a passport.
