Updated on May 14, 2024

Portugal is a country located in the southern part of Europe. It is well known for its beaches, specifically the ones that are situated in the Algarve. You can also find a lot of historic places in this country, as it is one of the oldest countries in Europe. These historical attractions include the Roman Ruins of Troia, Belem Tower, and St. George’s Castle. Aside from popular tourist spots, you can spend your vacation chilling while dining in at Caldo Verde and other iconic local eateries that serve traditional Portuguese dishes.

Citizens of Montenegro have been enjoying visa-free entry to Schengen Area member states, including Portugal. Unfortunately, this will change by the end of 2022. The European Commission set up a system to grant travel authorizations to visitors from visa-waiver countries as a requirement for entering the Schengen Area, and this includes the Portugal ETIAS for Citizens of Montenegro.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you call the travel authorization that Citizens of Montenegro need to obtain before traveling to the Schengen Area?

The new system is called ETIAS which is an acronym for European Travel Information and Authorization System. It functions much like the ESTA that is utilized by the United States of America. It will grant authorization to eligible applicants to travel and enter the Schengen Area. This will become a requirement for non-Schengen countries whose citizens currently don’t need a visa to enter the region. The system will be in operation by the end of 2022.

The main purpose of the ETIAS is to reinforce the immigration and security measures currently being used by the Schengen countries. This will identify possible threats and keep them from going into Schengen territory. It can also minimize illegal immigration and protect the citizens of the Schengen Area as well as the millions of visitors that come annually.

If I’m traveling with a minor, do I have to apply for separate ETIAS authorizations for everyone?

Yes. The travel authorization has no exemptions in terms of the applicant’s age. Children under 18 years old and persons above 70 years old must apply and obtain a ETIAS before the date of travel- but they won’t have to pay the application fee. However, this fee is not inclusive of other charges like the processing fee.

Everyone from Montenegro who wants to enter the Schengen Area is obliged to get a Portugal ETIAS for Citizens of Montenegro beforehand. This applies to eligible individuals from other countries as well.

I am a citizen of Montenegro. How long can I stay in Portugal?

As a citizen of Montenegro, you are allowed to stay in the Schengen area for a total of 90 days within the 180-day period. The holder must exit the country once the Portugal ETIAS for Citizens of Montenegro is about to expire. If the holder violates the 90/180 rule, he/she may be deported and banned from applying for an ETIAS in the future.

You can get your ETIAS at iVisa.com.

Can I go back to the Schengen Area after my first trip?

The ETIAS can be used with limitations as a multiple-entry travel authorization. Meaning to say, the holders can enter and exit the Schengen Area as many times as they want. However, this is still subject to the 90/180 rule so the actual number of entries allowed is finite, limited by the provision on the duration of stay.

What do I need to prepare before applying for the travel authorization?

There are requirements that must be met before applying for ETIAS. The following are the requirements in order to obtain the travel authorization:

  • Complete application form which can be obtained at iVisa.com.
  • Mode of payment which can be a debit/credit card and PayPal account.
  • Passport copy that needs to be scanned. The information on the bio page including on the ICAO line must be readable.
