Currently, most non-EU travelers only need a passport to visit Switzerland. However, this will change in 2024. All visa-free travelers outside the European Union will need an ETIAS Switzerland visa waiver to enter the country and be able to travel within the Schengen area.

The European Travel Information and Authorization System or ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization required for all travelers who want to visit the Schengen area and can currently enter the European Union without a visa.

The European Commission created ETIAS Switzerland as part of a fully electronic system to improve internal border controls within the Schengen Area. Additionally, it’ll help them identify foreign visitors coming into European countries.

Visit Switzerland: Who can apply for ETIAS Switzerland?

The ETIAS for Switzerland is designed for nationals of visa-exempt countries, which means that you don't need a visa to enter the Schengen Area countries for the time being.

To apply for the ETIAS Switzerland, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • You’ll enter the Schengen zone through Switzerland,

  • You’ll visit only Switzerland in the zone,

  • During your Euro trip, you’ll spend more time in Switzerland than in other Schengen countries.

Remember, you’ll need a visa for more than a 90-day stay in all Schengen countries.

Who doesn't need to apply for an ETIAS Switzerland?

If you’re from a Schengen Area country, you don’t need to apply for the ETIAS to visit Switzerland. However, if you’re from one of the non-EU countries that aren’t eligible for ETIAS, you probably need a valid visa. Can minors apply for an ETIAS Switzerland?

All passport holders must have their European visa waiver. However, the parents must complete this document for the child. You must include a duly notarized and signed authorization letter.

How long can I stay in Switzerland with the ETIAS?

The ETIAS will allow foreigners to enter any Schengen country without restrictions. You can stay for up to 90 days per entry in the Schengen zone.

ETIAS Switzerland validity: How long is the ETIAS Switzerland valid for?

The ETIAS Switzerland will be valid for three years. However, if your passport expires before ETIAS validity, the travel authorization will no longer be valid. From 2024, it’ll be the only way to visit Switzerland as a mandatory requirement to enter any Schengen member.

Can I extend my ETIAS Switzerland?

No, the ETIAS Switzerland cannot be extended. Once it expires, you must apply for a new ETIAS.

ETIAS Switzerland will be available in 2024, so be aware that you won’t be able to enter Switzerland without it once this document comes into force.

ETIAS application: How to apply online for the ETIAS Switzerland?
